Firefighters from Battalions 2 & 3 were alerted at shortly after 2PM for the report of smoke coming from a house a 608 Clay Street in the city's West End neighborhood. The box alarm consisted of Engines 3, 6, 8, 18, Tower 2 (operating Reserve Ladder 1), Tower 6, Rescue 2, Squad Engine 4, Battalions 2, 3, and SOC Chief. As companies marked in route, dispatch reported they were receiving calls now for that address with callers reporting flames coming from the basement windows.
Rescue 2 was the first unit to arrive and reported fire showing sides A & D from the basement, heavy smoke showing all sides and established command. Engine 3 was next to arrive, secured their own water supply and began stretching a line for fire attack. Rescue 2 had vertical vent and primary search. Other arriving companies provided additional attack and back-up lines, ground ladders, secondary searches, and RIT.
The fire was controlled in the basement quickly, but not before it had extended to division two and fire could be seen venting from the roof after it was cracked. Firefighters had the fire under control 30 mins into the incident but remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and assisting in investigation. All searches proved negative and no injuries were reported. The fire is still under investigation.
